Both strategies can meet current code targets. The difference is what happens to the attic itself, and to any equipment routed through it.

If your air conditioner is nearing the end of its service life, a properly sealed attic is also worth factoring into the replacement conversation — a unit sized for a leaky, superheated attic is often oversized for a sealed one, and your installer should account for that when it's time to replace equipment rather than defaulting to a like-for-like swap.

We hear the shingle-warranty question often enough that it's worth addressing directly: adding spray foam to the underside of your roof deck from inside the attic does not void a manufacturer roofing warranty. The confusion usually traces back to a different install method — exterior foam applied to the outside of the roof deck — which changes shingle temperature behavior in a way interior attic-side foam does not.
